Clowns for Peace
 |
The Kaleidoscope Konnections Board of Directors and I are thrilled to introduce an innovative, empowering new program. This year we will work with middle-school youth in after-school programs to help students to create their own productions on gang prevention. Performances might include music, rap, poetry... whatever the the kids choose to incorporate. They will then present their original programs to middle and high schools throughout the area. Schools, artists and musicians are already banding together to help. We are also looking for individuals, businesses and community groups to sponsor the program at various local schools. Please let me know if you'd like to be a part of this exciting community initiative.
We've also been speaking with former Yakima City Council Member Sonja Rodriguez, who is forming a new non-profit organization to help prevent gang involvement, and I've been in contact with the Kennewick Police Department, working on a collaborative effort to bring Bloomin" Buddies" to their elementary schools. KK is looking forward to partnering with Sonja and other area leaders who are taking positive action for the benefit of our communities.
If you have further suggestions on how or with whom we might partner to maximize the impact of our efforts, or have information on local or federal funding for gang prevention, please let us know.
Blessings,
Maureen Mould

Summer Holiday Fund Drive: Support Youth Development!
|
Many of you will soon receive our "holiday
donor letter." We are gearing up for our work in the schools this fall and funds are needed to help positively impact the elementary-age children.
Our program teaches children to build their confidence in saying "No!" to bullies, gangs and drugs, and teaches respect for differences and feelings.
A huge thank you to Board President Michael Weber, who is underwriting the cost of this mailing to kick off our Summer Holiday Fund Drive.

A Gift Worth a Thousand Words
|
| Our clowns are in need of Polaroid 600 Film and old Polaroid cameras. These photos are one of the best gifts we can leave with a child or invalid. Please donate today to help us provide these reminders of laughter, joy and togetherness.
Film, cameras and checks can all be sent to us at 3416 Taylor Way, Yakima, WA 98902 |

Keeping Up With the Clowns
Kaleidoscope Konnections clown and sound tech Larry Davis recently traveled to Tacoma to present "Making Friends" for Franklin-Pierce Head Start families. The children were so excited and loud, Larry had to double check to see if the speakers were working.
Putter, Toodle-Loo and OOCHEE are now gearing up for several more performances of "Making Friends" for kindergarten orientations. We love being present to help parents and children relax into this new and exciting environment. More information about the program is available here.
OOCHEE keeps 'em entertained.
 |
OOCHEE spent a wild week on Orcas Island with 42 little boys, ages 6-8, and their 42 high school mentors. Phew! It was round-the-clock work! And great fun, too. This yearly program is offered by Trailseekers, a Christian-based outreach program. OOCHEE played her banjo every morning, at dinner and at campfire, and with laughter helped to reinforce the Christian themes of love and action. It was also wonderful to work with Kennewick clown Big Top, AKA Richard Melendy, who was there passing out peanuts and offering a friendly smile to everyone. |
A Moment of Gratitude
Our BOD is Fantastic!
A special thanks goes out this month to several of our Board Members:
Vice-President Lisa Smith
|
 |
Lisa Smith recently attended a Gang-Free Coalition meeting
to learn more about collaborating with law enforcement
officials to preventing gang involvement. She promoted our
newly revised Bloomin' Buddies program, which now
combines bully prevention with gang and drug prevention. To
learn more about Bloomin' Buddies, click here to see an overview
of the content.
Teresa Hoon
 |
Teresa Hoon is researching funding opportunities and writing grant proposals to corporate foundations and other
funding sources so the clowns can expand their gang and bully prevention assemblies throughout the state and elsewhere.
Would you like to be part of our board? Please contact Maureen to find out more. Out-of-towners, don't be shy, we have a speaker phone so all can participate.
